Het jaar 2018 is nog maar net op gang gekomen, maar toch hebben we al weer een aantal pareltjes op de markt zien komen. Eentje daarvan is het instrumentale debuutalbum van The Sun Burns Bright. Officieel is het een eenmansproject van Chris Garr uit Birmingham (Engeland), maar hij wordt op dit album bijgestaan door drummer Richard Keefer en multi-instrumentalist Jason Sissoyev. Jason tekende eveneens voor de mix, productie en mastering. De opnames vonden in de zomer en najaar van 2017 plaats in Portland, Oregon. Het artwork werd verzorgd door Jordan Householder en laat een foto zien van een meer met zwevende glimmende bolletjes. Het geeft goed de sfeer op dit album weer.
Glinsterende sluimeringen worden afgewisseld met zware distortion zonder dat het onverwachts uit de hoek komt zetten. Elk nummer kent een fijne opbouw die de ene keer wat sneller gaat als de andere keer. In het openingsnummer The Glass Is Always Full bijvoorbeeld duurt het ruime drie en een halve minuut voordat de zware gitaren worden ingezet, tot die tijd wordt er rustig opgebouwd naar de climax. Deze muziek luister je het beste met je ogen dicht en stel je dan eens een kleine vakantie aan de rand van het meertje voor. Je hoort duidelijk een dreiging aankomen, dat er ander weer op komst is,maar je wilt ook niet anders. Ook in Footprints wordt het meertje, dat nog zo rustig aan de dag was begonnen ruw verstoord, maar ook hier gebeurt dat pas nadat de dreigende wolken de vallei zijn binnen getrokken. Eigenlijk heeft dit nummer exact dezelfde opbouw als zijn voorganger. Als de storm lijkt over te zijn getrokken blijven de bomen nog wat nadruppen in Never Departing Shadows. Het zonnetje breekt door en een mooie lentedag lijkt aanstaande te zijn. Toch blijkt de storm nog niet klaar en komt andermaal de razende wind opsteken. Ik ga uiteraard niet je hele vakantie voorkauwen, die mag je zelf verder invullen.
Wel verklap ik je dat The Sun Burns Bright meerdere lagen legt in de muziek, door meerdere gitaarpartijen tegelijk te spelen. De baslijnen voegen ook duidelijk een eigen laag toe in de muziek, net als de drums.
Zoals gezegd is het jaar nog maar net begonnen, maar de lat wordt met Through Dusk, Came The Light al behoorlijk hoog gelegd. Mensen die houden van het werk van bands als This Will Destroy You, Explosions In The Sky, The Echelon Effect of This Patch Of Sky doen er goed aan om dit album aan te schaffen. Blind.

The year 2018 has only just started, but we have seen a few diamonds already. One of them is the instrumental debut album of The Sun Burns Bright. Officially it is a one-man project by Chris Garr from Birmingham (England), but he is assisted on this album by drummer Richard Keefer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Sissoyev. Jason also signed for the mix, production and mastering. The recordings took place in mid and late 2017 in Portland, Oregon. The artwork was provided by Jordan Householder and shows a picture of a lake with floating shiny balls. It gives a good impression of the atmosphere on this album.
Shimmering slumbering alternates with heavy distortion without unexpectedly appearances. Every song has a nice tension building structure where climaxes vary when they occur. In the opening song The Glass Is Always Full, for example, it takes a good three and a half minutes before the heavy guitars are used, until that time it is quietly built up to the climax. This music is best listened to with your eyes closed and then imagine a small holiday at the edge of the lake. You clearly hear a threat coming, that there is a change of weather coming up, but you do not want anything else. Also in Footprints the small lake, which was still so quiet in the day, was roughly disrupted, but here too it only happens after the threatening clouds have entered the valley. Actually, this song has exactly the same structure as its predecessor. When the storm seems to have pulled over, the trees will continue to drizzle in Never Departing Shadows. The sun breaks through and a beautiful spring day seems to be imminent. Still, the storm is not over yet and the wind is coming up again. Of course I will not spoil your entire holiday, you can continue to mesmerize yourself.
I do tell you that The Sun Burns Bright puts several layers in the music by playing several guitars simultaneously. The bass lines also clearly add their own layer in the music, just like the drums.
As said, the year has only just begun, but the bar is already quite high with Through Dusk, Came The Light. People who love the works of bands like This Will Destroy You, Explosions In The Sky, The Echelon Effect or This Patch Of Sky do well to purchase this album. Blindly.
