Darker Shapes heeft eindelijk een volwaardige opvolger uitgebracht voor Aud uit 2016. Intussen werden we wel warm gehouden door de twee EP’s Low en Kavik, maar een volledig album is toch anders. Het duo Brad Pickens en Kyle Dawalt uit Colorado / Indiana laat op Raven horen waarom velen al naar dit album uitkeken.
Liefhebbers van het genre, denk aan Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Ros, This Will Destroy You of Red Sparowes, hebben er met Darker Shapes een mogelijke favoriet bij gekregen.
Het album opent met Gondola, hetgeen wel eens tot album-favoriet zou kunnen uitgroeien. Dat heeft met name te maken met de zang. Deze harmonieën maken de zang tot een extra instrument. New Capture laat meer een atmosfeer horen die ik zou toeschrijven aan IJslandse bands als Solstafir en Sigur Ros. Een vibe die ook in Maker aanwezig is. Sowieso een geweldig nummer overigens, al was het alleen maar vanwege de toevoeging van de saxofoon aan het einde.
Opvallend is dat de meeste nummers zo rond de 3 à 4 minuten klokken. Hetgeen inhoudt dat de muziek redelijk direct is en geen lange opbouw kent. Zonder de kortere nummers te kort willen te doen, zijn het toch juiste de langere nummers die op mij de meeste indruk maken. Maar dat is persoonlijk.
Het album sluit af met een remix door Jimmy Thorn van het nummer Subtleties, waarvan het origineel staat op Kavik. Na 40 minuten is het helaas al weer voorbij en druk ik nogmaals op play. Er valt namelijk genoeg te beleven tussen de lagen. Zeker een album die vaker in mijn speler gaat belanden.

Darker Shapes has finally released a full-fledged successor to Aud from 2016. In the meantime we were kept warm by the two EPs Low and Kavik, but a full album is different. The duo Brad Pickens and Kyle Dawalt from Colorado / Indiana prove with Raven why many were already looking forward to this album.
Fans of the genre, think of Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Ros, This Will Destroy You or Red Sparowes, may have found a possible new favorite with Darker Shapes.
The album opens with Gondola, which could turn into an album favorite. That has to do with the vocals in particular. These harmonies make the vocals sound like an extra instrument. New Capture shows more of an atmosphere that I would ascribe to Icelandic bands like Solstafir and Sigur Ros. A vibe that is also present in Maker. A great song by the way, if only because of the addition of the saxophone at the end.
It is striking that most songs clock around 3 to 4 minutes. Which means that the music is reasonably direct and has less gradual build-up in the songstructure. With all the respect to the shorter songs, for me it’s the longer songs that make the most impression on me. But that is personal.
The album ends with a remix by Jimmy Thorn of the song Subtleties, which original is on Kavik.
After 40 minutes the album is over and I hit play again. There is enough to experience between the layers. Certainly an album that will end up in my player more often.
