Het uit Rome afkomstige Il Giardino Degli Specchi is in 2015 als duo begonnen. Valerio Marcellino en Marco Andrea Lippa begonnen toen met het creëren van ambient soundscapes met psychedelische gitaar, synths en stemmen. In 2016 traden Marco Gianfranceschi (bass) en Chiara Bellucco (drums) toe tot de band en veranderde de stijl van de band richting de post-rock.
In juni 2017 bracht de band een eerste EP uit met daarop drie tracks. Na deze release werd er een crowdfunding campagne opgezet om het eerste volledige album te kunnen financieren. Dit was een succes en sinds 9 april is dan ook Oltremare verkrijgbaar. Op Oltremare vinden we de tracks Sasha Grey en Toilet To Sleep van deze EP terug, die voor dit album opnieuw zijn geremasterd. Voorlopig is het album alleen nog als CD en digitaal beschikbaar.
Oltremare begint met het rustige Nessundove, waarin de experimenteerdrang van de band al tot uiting komt, maar de nadruk vooral ligt op de ambient soundscapes. In Il Sogno Di Eleanor begint de band duidelijk aan een nummer met meer songstructuur. Er wordt naar een climax toegewerkt en de band laat meer zijn doom-invloeden horen. De pedalen worden ingedrukt en het geheel wordt daarmee wat zwaarder. In het daarop volgende Leonardo zorgen de gesampelde stemmen voor een surreële toevoeging aan het experimentele geheel. Alles leidt uiteindelijk naar een climax aan het einde van het nummer. Ook in het langste nummer op het album, I Will Stare At The Cold Of Your Eyes duurt bijna 8 minuten, gebruikt de band atmosferische klanken om tot een versterkt hoogtepunt te komen. Gaandeweg wordt de stemvervormer ingezet om een soort refreintje te creëren.
Quasar kent een totaal andere opbouw als de voorgaande nummers. Het nummer is veel duisterder en haalt zijn invloeden meer uit de IJslandse post-metal van Solstafir of het Finse Callisto. Het nummer wordt opgevolgd door Le Scogliere Di Moher, hetgeen De kliffen van Moher betekent. De Ode aan deze Ierse natuurpracht fungeert als anticlimax op het voorgaande nummer.
Je zou kunnen stellen dat hiermee het album af is en er nog een paar bonustracks volgen. De al eerder genoemde geremasterde tracks Sasha Grey en Toilet To Sleep, samen met de titeltrack Oltremare sluiten dit album af.
Il Giardino Degli Specchi is Italiaans voor de spiegeltuin en is bijzonder geschikt voor liefhebbers van bijvoorbeeld The Best Pessimist, Sleep Dealer of The End Of The Ocean. Oltremare is enerzijds een afwisselend album geworden, maar bevat toch een bepaalde lijn richting een climax. De vier bandleden gunnen zichzelf de ruimte om te experimenteren zonder het geheel te verliezen. En dat is best knap en getuigd van een stukje vakmanschap. Italiaans vakmanschap!

Il Giardino Degli Specchi from Rome started in 2015 as a duo. Valerio Marcellino and Marco Andrea Lippa started creating ambient soundscapes with psychedelic guitar, synths and voices. In 2016, Marco Gianfranceschi (bass) and Chiara Bellucco (drums) joined the band which led to a style-change towards a more post-rock style.
In June 2017, the band released a first EP with three tracks on it. After this release, a crowdfunding campaign was set up to finance the first full album. This was a success and Oltremare has been available since 9th of April. On Oltremare we find the tracks Sasha Gray and Toilet To Sleep from the EP, which have been remastered for this album. For now, the album is only available as a CD and digitally.
Oltremare starts with the calm Nessundove, in which the band’s experimental tendency is already expressed, but the emphasis is mainly on the ambient soundscapes. In Il Sogno Di Eleanor the band clearly starts a song with more song structure. A climax is worked on and the band shows more of its doom influences. The pedals are pushed and everything becomes heavier. In the following song, called Leonardo, the sampled voices add a surreal addition to the experimental music. Everything ultimately leads to a climax at the end of the song. Also in the longest track on the album, I Will Stare At The Cold Of Your Eyes lasts almost 8 minutes, the band uses atmospheric sounds to come to an enhanced climax. Gradually, the voice distorter is used to create a kind of refraining.
Quasar has a totally different structure and approach than the previous songs. This one is much darker and gets its influences more from the Icelandic post-metal of Solstafir or the Finnish Callisto. The track is followed by Le Scogliere Di Moher, which means The Cliffs of Moher. The ode to these beuatiful Irish shores acts as an anti-climax on the previous song.
You could say that the album ends here and there are a few bonus tracks to follow. The aforementioned remastered tracks Sasha Grey and Toilet To Sleep, together with the title track Oltremare conclude this album.
Il Giardino Degli Specchi is Italian for the mirror garden and is particularly suitable for fans of bands like The Best Pessimist, Sleep Dealer or The End Of The Ocean.
Oltremare has become an alternating album, but still contains a certain line towards a climax. The four band members allow themselves the space to experiment without losing the bigger picture. And that is pretty awesome and attested to a piece of craftsmanship. Italian craftsmanship!
